Home Schooling Advantages and Disadvantages

There are numerous advantages to home schooling your children. The convenience factor is great. There can never be complications getting to school, missing the bus, being off for snow days that you would have to make up later or having to walk in the rain. You don’t have to buy the often unappetizing school lunch, or get up early to make a lunch to bring with you. You don’t have to worry about what to wear or try to outdo other students with fashion statements if your a girl. And you don’t have to worry about getting into fights, that often “just happen” with adolescent boys. And neither one would have to worry about taking showers in the presence of others after Gym Class. Of course those are things that mainly benefit the students.

There are many advantages for the parents as well. First off, you’ll never have to hear a third hand story about any negative issues that may have happened at school. That’s right, the kind that worries you to death and prompts you to call one of the other kids mothers to see what’s going on. I guess you would call that “Parent Gossip”. You won’t ever have to worry about your kids bringing home bad habits or using foul language they picked up on. No more worrying about lunches. No worry about the possibility that your kids are joining a “Gang” or hanging with the wrong crowd. You will never think your child may have cheated on a test or failed to do homework. And those are just a few of the advantages that the parents can enjoy.

However, as with anything else, there is always “another side to the coin”. There are some disadvantages that a lot of people don’t initially think about when it comes to home schooling. As a parent and home school teacher, the education of your child is your responsibility, and is reliant solely on your ability to do supplemental research to enhance the learning experience. This involves a great deal of extra time investment for the parent. Home schooling may require either parent to stay home and be the teacher, or may put greater stress on parents who both work for a living.

Another disadvantage is that your child may miss out on the benefits of a classroom setting which provides opportunities of socialization and interaction with other students in a learning environment. A classroom full of students with different backgrounds and personal beliefs will provide ideas that can stimulate a child’s mind to think and form opinions.

A Research Comparison of Western and Non-Western Healing Arts

Western healing arts can be compared and contrasted with non-western healing arts. This article identifies the western healing art of multicultural counseling in comparison to non-western healing arts. Research has indicated the Western ideology is embedded in the practices of counseling and development (Daniels, 2007). Western counseling is oriented primarily toward helping individuals help themselves so they can successfully function by adapting to their environmental contexts. Western ideology emphasizes the rational over the relational, the logical over the emotional, competition over cooperation, and independence over interdependence.

 Western ideology is based on individualism, which often leads to self-focused behavior. The goal of western counseling is the strengthening of the self, personality, or ego. The philosophy behind Chinese medicine is a melding of tenets from Buddhism, Confucianism, and the combined religious and philosophical ideas of Taoism. Although there are various schools of thought among practitioners of traditional Chinese medicine, five Taoist axioms form its basis. There are natural laws which govern the universe, including human beings. The natural order of the universe is innately harmonious and well organized. When people live according to the laws of the universe, they live in harmony with that universe and the natural environment. The universe is dynamic, with change as it’s only constant. Stagnation is in opposition to the law of the universe and causes what Western medicine calls illness. All living things are connected and interdependent. Humans are intimately connected to and affected by all facets of their environment. The broader conceptual framework on multicultural counseling competencies is based on the Association for Multicultural Counseling and Development as described in Multicultural Counseling Competencies (Roysircar et al., 2003). The model emphasizes a practitioner’s awareness of cultural values, beliefs, and biases in order to be aware of the client’s world view and provide culturally appropriate treatment.

 J.D. Kinzie (1990), comparing basic western values with Asian values, illustrates areas of difference between western and non-western healing. It shows that Indochinese patient values focus on interdependence, and western practitioners believe in personal choice and independence. Chinese have structured and appropriate social relationships, while Westerners believe in situational ethics, challenge for authorities, and equality of family relationships. Chinese healing believes one should live in harmony with nature, and Westerners believe nature is to be mastered. Chinese believe that mental illness is caused by imbalance in cosmic forces or lack of will power. Westerners believe that mental illness is a result of mental and physical factors. Indochinese patient values are that treatment should be short and rapid. Westerners believe therapy could take a long time. Easterners believe the healer should be active and give solutions to problems. Westerners see the therapist as often passive, and the best solution is one developed by the patient.

 Another major difference is how the patient is regarded. In western medicine, patients with similar complaints or diseases usually will receive virtually the same treatment. What is E-learning

E-learning comprises all forms of electronically supported learning and teaching. The information and communication systems , whether networked or not, serve as specific media to implement the learning process. The term will still most likely be utilized to reference out-of-classroom and in-classroom educational experiences via technology, even as advances continue in regard to devices and curriculum.

E-learning is essentially the computer and network-enabled transfer of skills and knowledge. E-learning applications and processes include Web-based learning, computer-based learning, virtual classroom opportunities and digital collaboration. Content is delivered via the Internet, intranet/extranet, audio or video tape, satellite TV, and CD-ROM. It can be self-paced or instructor-led and includes media in the form of text, image, animation, streaming video and audio.

Today one can still find these terms being used, along with variations of e-learning such as e-learning, E-learning, and eLearning. The terms will be utilized throughout this article to indicate their validity under the broader terminology of E-learning.

Developments in internet and multimedia technologies are the basic enabler of e-learning, with consulting, content, technologies, services and support being identified as the five key sectors of the e-learning industry.

Higher education

By 2006, 3.5 million students were participating in on-line learning at institutions of higher education in the  According to the Sloan Foundation reports, there has been an increase of around 12–14 percent per year on average in enrollments for fully online learning over the five years 2004–2009 in the US post-secondary system, compared with an average of approximately 2 per cent increase per year in enrollments overall. Allen and Seamen (2009) claim that almost a quarter of all students in post-secondary education were taking fully online courses in 2008, and a report by Ambient Insight Research suggests that in 2009, 44 per cent of post-secondary students in the USA were taking some or all of their courses online, and projected that this figure would rise to 81 percent by 2014. Thus it can be seen that e-learning is moving rapidly from the margins to being a predominant form of post-secondary education, at least in the USA.

Many higher educations, for-profit institutions, now offer on-line classes. By contrast, only about half of private, for-profit   schools offer them. The Sloan report, based on a poll of academic leaders, indicated that students generally appear to be at least as satisfied with their on-line classes as they are with traditional ones. Private institutions may become more involved with on-line presentations as the cost of instituting such a system decreases. Properly trained staff must also be hired to work with students on-line. Opportunities in education today would have been impossible even a few decades back.
